Painting your ceilings and walls

Ceilings

  • Start painting on the ceiling in a corner nearest the window and work away from the light.
  • Fill in the corners with a small paint brush before painting in horizontal lines 75cm wide across the ceiling with a large brush or roller. This helps control your working area to ensure the whole surface is covered evenly.
  • Either use a step ladder or a roller on a pole to reach.
  • Wash out brushes and rollers as soon as you can after completion of the work.

Painting with a roller

  • A roller will cover walls and ceilings quickly and evenly.
  • To load the roller, rock it backwards and forwards in the paint tray, pushing it up to the top of the slope to remove excess paint.
  • Apply with criss-cross strokes to the wall, ensuring a smooth start and finish to each stroke - removing the roller suddenly may cause splashes.

Painting with a pad

  • If you are unsure about using a roller, use a pad. With a pad, work in strips up and down the wall.
  • Aim to finish either a wall or ceiling before you stop, otherwise you may leave a pronounced strip on the wall.
  • If you do not get a good cover first time, leave it to dry and apply another coat.
